Downtown

Part of the Greater Edmonton metropolitan area, Downtown St. Albert is a neighbourhood within St. Albert, Alberta.

Transportation

People who want to be in a community that's walkable will be pleased with the rather pedestrian-friendly nature of Downtown; many daily errands can be run without needing to resort to a vehicle, and numerous businesses are reasonably close by. Downtown is also fairly cycling-friendly because the cycling infrastructure is reasonably well-developed. Driving is usually the favoured way to navigate this part of the city. It is especially convenient to park, and the majority of homes for sale are a very short car ride from the nearest highway. However, public transit users may find limited choices in Downtown as a result of the low service level. Nonetheless, residents are served by a few bus lines, and bus stops are typically very close by.

Services

Daycares and schools are very easy to get to without the use of a car from most properties for sale in Downtown. When it comes to food, a general and a specialty grocery store is always only a rather short distance away in this neighbourhood. In addition, those who like to dine in restaurants will have a fair number of opportunities, and there are also a few coffee shops in Downtown.

Character

Downtown offers a calm ambience. Downtown is reasonably quiet, as there isn't a lot of street noise or city clamour - however some areas can be quite loud, especially around the railway line.

Housing

Over half of the housing stock of Downtown consists of small apartment buildings and single detached homes, while large apartment buildings are the main alternative in the housing stock. This neighbourhood has a good variety of unit sizes, ranging from lofts to four or more bedrooms. About three quarters of the population of this neighbourhood own their home whereas the rest are renters. This area did not experience a single building boom; the construction of new homes in Downtown was spread throughout several decades in recent history.
