Thornlea is a neighbourhood within Markham, Ontario, which is located in the Greater Toronto Area metropolitan area.

Transportation

Cars are a great medium of transportation in this neighbourhood. It is very convenient to park, and nearby highways, such as Highway 407, are very easy to reach from any location in this part of the city. However, the public transit service in Thornlea is not especially frequent. Nevertheless, there are a few bus lines passing through the neighbourhood, and most homes are very close to a bus stop. There are relatively few pedestrians out on the streets of this part of the city, despite the fact that many daily errands can be run without the use of a car. It is also difficult to commute by bicycle in this neighbourhood as cyclists are faced with quite a few elevation changes, and there are very few bike lanes.

Services

Families will find that wherever their house is located in Thornlea, daycares and high schools are close by. On the other hand, this part of Markham does not have any primary schools. When it comes to eating, shopping for one's groceries frequently demands the use of a car in this area. That being said, a restaurant is often just around the corner.

Character

Thornlea offers a wide variety of green spaces to enjoy. There are a few public green spaces close by for residents to unwind in and they are very well-situated, resulting in them being easy to get to from a lot of locations within the neighbourhood. This area remains relatively quiet, since there are few pedestrians; however there can be higher levels of noise for those who are around the railway line, Highway 407 or Highway 404.

In Thornlea, the overwhelming majority of buildings are single detached homes, but duplexes are also present in the housing stock. This part of Markham experienced its biggest construction boom in the 1980s, so most of the available properties are from this era. There is a higher proportion of four or more bedroom homes in this area. Roughly all of the population of this neighbourhood own their home and renters make up the remainder.
