Georgestown

Georgestown is a neighbourhood within St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, which is located in the Greater St. John's metropolitan area.

Transportation

It is easy for people travelling on foot to navigate Georgestown; most day-to-day needs are convenient to carry out by walking, and a variety of businesses are quite close by. However, Georgestown is not especially amenable to bicycling because there are a limited number of bike lanes, and there is a significant amount of elevation changes. The public transit service in this part of St. John's is not very frequent. Thankfully, property owners benefit from a few bus lines, and bus stops are not very far-removed from most houses. In contrast, Georgestown is car friendly. It is easy to park, and it is a very short drive to the closest highway from any location in Georgestown.

Services

The nearest supermarket in this neighbourhood is generally only a short walk away. A small selection of restaurants can be found in Georgestown as well. Concerning education, both primary and secondary schools are very easy to reach on foot from any location in this part of St. John's. However, it can be challenging to get to daycares as a pedestrian.

Character

Most areas in Georgestown are especially quiet, as the streets are very tranquil. Even though the ambience is not the liveliest in this part of St. John's, the vibe can still be quite lively around its busier streets.

Housing

Homeowners occupy about two thirds of the units in the neighbourhood and the remainder are rented. Small apartment buildings are the predominant housing type, representing roughly 30% of buildings in this part of St. John's, while the rest are mainly single detached homes and townhouses. A majority of the housing growth in this neighbourhood took place pre-1960. This area offers mainly three bedroom and two bedroom homes.
