Part of the Greater Halifax metropolitan area, Porters Lake is a community within Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Transportation

Driving is a great transportation option in Porters Lake. Most real estate listings are a rather short drive from the nearest highway, and it is especially convenient to park. However, Porters Lake is not very transit friendly. Nonetheless, the community is served by a few bus lines, and most residences are very close to a bus stop. It is very challenging for pedestrians to navigate this part of the municipality because running common errands is impractical without a car. Porters Lake is also not very bicycling-friendly because riding is rendered arduous by the typically steep topography, and there are very few bike lanes.

Services

In all but a very small number of cases, a vehicle is required in Porters Lake to reach the nearest supermarket. There are also a few options for those who value restaurants in close proximity. Concerning education, daycares are convenient to access on foot from most homes for sale in this area. However, there are only a limited number of primary schools in this part of the municipality and consequently they can be a rather long walk away. Additionally, Porters Lake does not have any high schools.

Character

The character of Porters Lake is exemplified by its slower-paced ambience. There are approximately 10 public green spaces nearby for residents to discover, such as Unnamed Park and O'Connell Drive Elementary School Park, which makes them easy to reach from a large number of locations in this community. Most areas in this area are especially quiet, as the streets are generally very calm.

Housing

Single detached homes and row houses are the predominant housing type in Porters Lake. This area is primarily composed of four or more bedroom and three bedroom homes. Homeowners occupy nearly 90% of the properties in the community and 10% are rented. The homes in this part of the municipality are quite new, since around 30% of its dwellings were built after the year 2000, while the majority of the remaining buildings were constructed in the 1960s and the 1980s.
