Otter Lake

The community of Otter Lake is part of the municipality of Halifax, Nova Scotia, which is located in the Greater Halifax metropolitan area.

Transportation

Otter Lake is very car friendly. Nearby highways are particularly easy to reach from any location in this area, and it is very convenient to access a place to park. Otter Lake is not very suited for biking because there are a good number of hills, and the cycling network is not very extensive. It is also very difficult for people travelling by foot to navigate this part of Halifax since running common errands is challenging without a vehicle.

Services

This part of the municipality does not contain any high schools or primary schools. Likewise, it can be very hard to reach daycares on foot. When it comes to food, in all but a very small number of cases, a vehicle is required to buy groceries.

Character

Otter Lake offers a broad selection of green spaces to enjoy. Reaching public green spaces, like Western Commons, is easy from most locations within the community since there are about 20 of them nearby for residents to explore. Lastly, it is relatively quiet in this part of the municipality, thanks to the presence of very few people out and about on the streets.

Housing

Otter Lake did not experience a single building boom; the construction of new buildings in the community was spread throughout multiple decades in recent history. In this area, many buildings are single detached homes, whereas the rest are mainly mobile homes. Homeowners occupy about 90% of the dwellings in Otter Lake and 10% are rented. This area is primarily composed of four or more bedroom and three bedroom homes.
