No matter the mode of transportation, it is reasonably convenient to get around in this neighbourhood. Travelling by public transit is convenient in this part of Ottawa. The closest rapid transit station, including Iris 1a (a) and Iris 2a (B) with access to the 75 |, is generally close by from the bulk of residences in the neighbourhood. The neighbourhood is served by around 30 bus lines, and bus stops are ordinarily nearby. Iris will also appeal to active people because it is suitable for cycling. More precisely, the cycling infrastructure is reasonably well-developed. Travelling by foot in Iris is not very popular, even though meeting daily needs is easy. On the other hand, the car is very often the preferred approach to get around in Iris. It is a short drive to the closest highway, such as Highway 417, from any location in this part of the city, and it is easy to park.

In all but a limited number of cases, a vehicle is required in Iris to access the nearest supermarket. Nonetheless, reaching the nearest pharmacy and thus some staple foods is usually convenient. Those who like to eat in restaurants will have a fair number of opportunities, and a small selection of cafes is available as well. It is also a reasonably short distance to a good selection of clothing stores. As far as education is concerned, families will find that wherever their property is situated in Iris, schools and daycares are close by.

The character of Iris is exemplified by its calm ambience. There are about 10 public green spaces close by for residents to discover, such as Pinecrest Recreation Complex and Park, and they are especially well-spread out, which makes them easy to get to. This area is also quiet, as there isn't a lot of street noise or city clamour - although that is not the case near Highway 417.

Single detached homes are the predominant housing type, representing about 45% of dwellings in Iris, and the rest are mainly large apartment buildings, small apartment buildings, and townhouses. This neighbourhood is primarily composed of two bedroom and three bedroom homes. The population residing in this area is evenly split between owners and renters. A majority of the housing growth in this neighbourhood occurred between 1960 and 1980.
